The Southern Africa Capacity and Institutional Building (SA-CIBIS) programme works to build well-governed, advocacy competent, financially sound, and self-sustaining OPDs at all levels — from national federations to the SAFOD Secretariat itself.
The SA-IPLJ programme works to embed disability rights into national and regional laws, policies, and frameworks — holding governments to account for commitments made to persons with disabilities across Southern Africa.
The SA-DRDLC programme builds the evidence base that SAFOD and its affiliates need — commissioning research, documenting lessons, and sharing findings to drive informed advocacy across Southern Africa.
The SA-PIAH programme works to make health systems across Southern Africa more accessible to persons with disabilities — tackling barriers in physical access, health worker attitudes, information design, and service delivery policies.
The SA-DEEP programme promotes skills training, enterprise development, and market access for persons with disabilities across Southern Africa.
The SA-DGMP programme promotes the inclusion of women and girls with disabilities in decision-making, social protection, and development, recognising that disability and gender discrimination must be tackled together.
The SA-IEP programme pushes for education systems across Southern Africa to be genuinely accessible to learners with disabilities; in classrooms, curricula, and the resources that governments commit to making inclusion real.
The SA-CYD programme promotes the rights and active participation of children and youths with disabilities across Southern Africa, equipping them with skills to advocate for themselves.

Persons with disabilities face a higher risk of death and injury in climate-related disasters. Yet they are routinely left out of disaster planning, early warning systems, and emergency response. This project addresses that gap directly.
SAFOD leads the project in partnership with CBM and seven national organisations across Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Together, they are building the capacity of organisations of persons with disabilities (OPDs) to engage in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation at national and regional level.
The project operates within four international frameworks:
Regional lead. Coordinates all activities and manages partner relations across the three countries.
Primary funder and technical partner. CBM brings expertise in disability-inclusive humanitarian response.
A regional synthesis of evidence on disability, social protection, and DRR across Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Published in 2025.
SAFOD Regional Guidelines on Inclusive Social Protection Mechanisms for Persons with Disabilities in Southern Africa, developed with CBM and German Cooperation.
OPDs in all three countries developed tailored action plans for monitoring inclusive early warning systems and advancing disability-inclusive DRR at national level.
A cohort of trained OPD representatives across three countries now has the skills to engage in DRR policy processes and monitor inclusive early warning systems.
A landmark publication produced through SAFOD's Disability and Sexuality initiative, challenging the widespread misconception that persons with disabilities are asexual or lack aspirations for intimate relationships, marriage, and family life.
The research explores how harmful stereotypes, stigma, and social exclusion continue to affect the sexual and reproductive rights of persons with disabilities across Southern Africa. It highlights the importance of recognizing the rights of persons with disabilities to access accurate information, health services, relationships, and opportunities to make informed choices about their lives.
Through evidence, lived experiences, and advocacy perspectives, the study promotes a more inclusive understanding of disability, sexuality, dignity, and human rights while calling for greater awareness and social change.
SAFOD seeks volunteers who can either currently utilise the internet wherever they may be, or physically work at our Secretariat — to mobilise resources, carry out online campaigns, document issues online, support with events management, and translate key documents.
