SAFOD CAMPAIGNS

Disability advocacy campaigns across Southern Africa

Campaigns that drive change

Our disability advocacy campaigns shift policy, raise awareness and amplify the voices of persons with disabilities across Southern Africa. Each campaign is rooted in evidence, led by OPDs, and built for lasting impact.

Campaigns are one of SAFOD's most powerful tools. They go beyond single projects. They build broad coalitions, shift public and political views, and create the conditions for lasting change in all 16 SADC Member States.

Our projects and national affiliates power this work. Here are our flagship campaigns.

Unlock The Everyday assistive technology campaign

SAFOD coordinates a regional assistive technology awareness campaign with 10 OPDs across Southern Africa. It runs in three phases and pushes for AT access as a human right, not charity. Activities include policy dialogues, awareness walks, media work and a social media drive.

Regional policy advocacy

Advocacy for the SADC Disability Protocol

Since 2016, SAFOD has led a campaign for a binding regional Disability Protocol at SADC level. The Protocol would require all 16 Member States to mainstream disability. The campaign also calls for a Disability Desk Office at the SADC Secretariat.

Inclusive ECDE campaign

Regional inclusive ECDE strategy

SAFOD campaigns so children with disabilities, aged 0 to 8, can learn alongside their peers. Built on OSISA-funded work in Lesotho, Zambia and Mozambique, it calls on SADC to adopt and fund a shared regional strategy for inclusive early learning.

SA-PIAH · Inclusive health

Inclusive COVID-19 responses campaign

This campaign worked to make sure no health emergency left persons with disabilities behind. Backed by FFO-funded research, SAFOD built a rights-based response strategy. Affiliates then pushed for inclusive COVID-19 programming across 10 SADC countries.

How our campaigns create change

We work with OPDs, governments and partners. Our campaigns draw on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and on evidence from our publications.
