Flagship Program 8: SA-DCYD

Southern Africa Development Program for Children and Youth with Disabilities (SA-DCYD)

Children and youth with disabilities in Southern Africa face significant challenges in accessing essential services and opportunities for development. They are often excluded from inclusive education, healthcare, and social services, which are not adequately tailored to meet their specific needs. The absence of comprehensive policies addressing their unique challenges further exacerbates their marginalization, leaving them outside mainstream development programs. Additionally, societal stigma and discrimination severely limit their ability to participate meaningfully in community life, leading to isolation and a lack of opportunities for personal growth. The gaps in data collection and research on children and youth with disabilities make it difficult to design effective interventions or advocate for necessary policy changes. Additionally, insufficient funding and resources hinder the ability of programs to scale up and address these critical issues. To ensure the rights and well-being of children and youth with disabilities, it is crucial to develop inclusive policies, improve data collection, and secure sustainable funding.

Priority Actions:

1. Advocate for and support initiatives that ensure children and youth with disabilities receive quality education and vocational training tailored to their needs.

2. Strengthen access to specialized healthcare and rehabilitation services that address the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of children and youth with disabilities.

3. Develop programs that empower young persons with disabilities to engage in leadership roles, participate in decision making processes, and advocate for their rights within their communities.
