SAFOD hosted its 7th hybrid General Assembly meeting on the 15th and 16th of August 2023 in Johannesburg, South Africa at Holiday Inn. This meeting brought together SAFOD’s national affiliates from all the 16 countries and the regional executive council members. This year’s general assembly meeting’s focus was on reporting for the two and a half years since the last general assembly meeting and elections for the new REC members in 2020.  

According to SAFOD's Constitution, it is at the General Assembly meeting, where the delegates representing the national affiliates of SAFOD meet twice every five years to deliberate on various policy and programmatic matters of the organizations, as well as to elect new members of the SAFOD's Regional Executive Council (REC).    

Delegates deliberated on issues finance with regards to affiliates membership subscriptions and the current status of SAFOD’s membership following up on constituency expansion proposals made in 2020. Another key item on the agenda for the meeting was the report on the current projects and activities that have and are being implemented by the secretariat and its national affiliates.  

One of SAFOD’s biggest mid term achievements highlighted at the general assembly meeting was the successful expansion of constituencies in Southern Africa. The secretariat reported endorsement of 6 more members in Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Comoros, Tanzania and Democratic Republic of Congo. Representatives from the above mentioned countries were also present at this year’s general assembly meeting in South Africa.
